Adam Volk

Adam Raymond Volk, 80, passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of September 10, 2026, with his beloved dog, Pickles, and his caretaker, Martial, at his side.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, September 22 at 11:00AM at the Bismarck Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place and burial will be held at a later date.

Adam was born on November 8, 1945, in Flasher, North Dakota, to Katherine and Elias Volk. He was the youngest of 17 children. Adam weighed an astonishing 18 ½ pounds at birth, and family lore has long speculated that he may have been the largest baby ever born in the state of North Dakota.

Adam spent most of his working life as a drywaller. A 15-foot fall left him with a lasting back injury, but it never took away his love of life, adventure, or a good story.

Adam was previously married to Georgene (Toman) Volk, who had a daughter, Angela, whom Adam adopted at age six. In 1989, Adam married his soulmate, Sandra Opp. Together they built a life filled with many happy adventures. They enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, camping and numerous four-wheeling trips to South Dakota with friends. Adam especially loved reminiscing about a trip he once made to Germany, his mother’s home country, and could always find a story to tell about his travels and experiences.

Those who knew Adam knew that a visitor to his home could always count on being offered a hot cup of coffee and, quite likely, a good conversation. His stories, humor and welcoming nature will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Adam was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra; his parents, Katherine and Elias; siblings, Amundus, Eugene, Leo, Melchior, Barbara, Father Edwin Volk, Anna Moran, Magdeline and Bud.

He is survived by his siblings, Evelyn, Theresa, Sister Anna, Valentina, Angelina and Lydia; daughter, Angie (Jay) Hanson; 2 grandchildren, Kaitlin and Hunter and many nieces and nephews.

The family extends a heartfelt thank-you to Martial and Melanie of Prudent Home Services, Tina of Human Services, as well as Rachel and Brynn of CaringEdge Hospice for the loving care and companionship they provided Adam following Sandra’s passing.

Adam will be remembered for his stories, his adventurous spirit, his love for Sandra, his faithful companion, Pickles and his simple kindness of always having a cup of coffee ready for those who came through his door.

May he rest in peace and may the stories he left behind continue to bring smiles and laughter to those who loved him.
