Alice Baszler

d. May 4, 2023

Alice Eunice Baszler, 95, died Thursday, May 4, 2023 at the Knife River Care Center in Beulah, ND.  Alice was born November 12, 1927 in Hazen, ND, the daughter of John and Emma (Grosz) Schramm.  She was raised on a farm north of Hazen with her 8 siblings.  Alice first met Vernon Baszler at a dance in Beulah.  They married on September 19, 1948 and were married 69 years until Vernon’s death in 2018.  She and Vern started their married life in Hazen, then lived over the years in Dunn Center, Mott, Minot and Bismarck, ND.  In the early years of her marriage Alice worked as a salesperson at Hanewald & Weigum in Hazen.  She worked at Buttrey’s Department Store in Minot and was proud to receive their Sales Person of the Year award in 1969. Alice held bookkeeping positions at several businesses throughout her working career.  She earned her GED in 1975, followed by Secretarial and Accounting classes from Bismarck Junior College.  She then worked as an Administrative Assistant at Heartview Foundation in Mandan for 12 years, retiring in 1988.

Alice loved social interactions with family, friends and customers.  Her father died when she was quite young so she was particularly close with her mother (Emma), 4 sisters (Irene, Verone, Ida and Marion) and 4 brothers (Roy, Walter, Ray and Delmar).  She rarely missed an opportunity during holidays to cart her family back to Hazen to spend time with her mother and extended family.  These relationships continued well into her later years with daily visits and monthly lunches with her sisters, even teaming up with some of her sisters in an exclusive home cleaning service in Bismarck (social German women knew how to keep a tidy house but would not work for just anyone!).

Alice had a kind demeanor, curiosity for life, an incredible sense of humor, a wonderful smile and an easy laugh.  It was not hard to get her to laugh, even if at her own expense!  Over the years she joined bowling leagues, golf leagues, bridge clubs and health clubs.  Alice volunteered for church organizations and activities, was active in the American Legion Auxiliary and volunteered at the St. Alexius gift shop for many years.  She loved playing pinochle, cribbage and other card games.  Alice truly treasured her time with her children and grandchildren, taking genuine interest in their lives, successes or challenges, and sharing her life with them.

Alice is survived by her children Bonnie (Mike) Krause of Hazen, ND and Tim (Stephanie) Baszler of Moscow, ID; her grandchildren Kristin Krause of Hazen, Susan (Chad) Drath of Weldon Spring, MO, Lauren (Chance) Leiseth of Benicia, CA and Michael Baszler of North Hollywood, CA; her great grandchildren Sydney Mach, Kyle Larson, Mya Drath and Liam Lieseth; her great-great grandson Kashton Larson, her sister Marion Suess of Bismarck, her brother Delmar Schramm of Hazen, her sister-in-law Orgena Schramm of Bismarck, and numerous nieces and nephews.  Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husband Vernon, sisters Irene Durant, Verone Richter and Ida Miller and brothers Roy, Walter and Ray Schramm.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM at the Bismarck Funeral Home on Friday, May 19, 2023, with interment to follow at the ND Veterans Cemetery in Mandan at 2:00 PM.

A service livestream will be available on the Bismarck Funeral Home website.
