Dalphina Marie Heier was born on June 30, 1931, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Zahn) Heier, on a farm south of Hague, ND. Dalphina is the oldest of seven children. She attended country school and Hague High School, made her First Holy Communion and Confirmation at St. Mary's Church in Hague, ND.
Dalphina married Joseph M. Jangula on September 27, 1948, at St. Mary's in Hague. They farmed 7 miles north of Zeeland, later moving to a dairy farm 3 miles north of Zeeland. They belonged to St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Zeeland. In 1980, Dalphina and Joseph retired and moved to Linton, ND. Joseph died in 1985. Shortly thereafter, Dalphina moved to Bismarck to care for her elderly mother, and to be nearer to her children.
While living in Zeeland, Dalphina was active in the choir at St. Andrew's and taught CCD classes. In Linton, she also sang in the choir at St. Anthony, was a member of Catholic Daughters and Homemakers Club.
On August 22, 1991, she married Edwin Mittelstedt at St. Anne's Church in Bismarck, ND. Ed and Dalphina celebrated 25 years of marriage in August 2016. Edwin passed away March 4, 2018.
Dalphina was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother and aunt, and friend to many. Her children were very dear to her, and she was a most loving, sweet and kind mother. Her strong spirit was a testament to the hard life she lived, raising her family, and working side-by-side on the farm with her husband Joseph through some very trying times; and her faith in God. She was a role model to those who knew her, especially to her children, for her steadfast and unconditional love, and will be dearly missed. Jesus will be greeting Dalphina with loving outstretched arms, the same way she greeted those who came to her home, and together they will be waiting for us in heaven with open arms.
Dalphina was an excellent cook, making her German specialties and amazing sweet treats. She made the best homemade bread to feed her family; she could whip up a batch of 4-6 loaves, fresh and hot, filling the house with the heavenly scent as we came home from school. She could also pluck a chicken from the yard and have a delicious chicken dinner or homemade chicken noodle soup before the feathers settled. She enjoyed many hobbies through the years; traveling to and dancing at Polka-Fests with Ed, crocheting and embroidery, find-a-word puzzles, and watching her beloved EWTN. She always enjoyed playing Pinochle, first with Joseph and their friends, then in Pinochle Clubs with Edwin, and finally in her last years, every Friday night with her children. She was a tiny (4ft, 10in) ball of energy, very content with her life, had a wonderful outlook and a good (sometimes mischievous) sense of humor.
Dalphina is survived by ten children and their families, Rita (Rick) Ciavarella, Francis (LaVonne) Jangula, Celestina (Gary) Finck, Elizabeth (Douglas) Jahner, Tony (LeeAnn) Jangula, Ken (Charlan) Jangula, Lucy (Dwight) Driscoll, and Joseph (Marie) Jangula, all of Bismarck, Gerald Jangula (Paulette Morse), Rapid City, SD and Mary (Dwight) Schlepp, Ashley, ND; 29 grandchildren and 62 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandson, sister-in-law Rose Heier; sisters, Alvina Voegele of Seattle, WA, Jane Anderson (Ron) of Bismarck, Carol Phau of Portland, OR, and Suzi (Sky) Grubb, Davenport, FL, and many special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Elizabeth, husband Joseph, an infant son Peter, grandson Jaden M. Jahner, husband Edwin, brother Alvin Heier of Bismarck, sister Charlotte Benfiet of Portland, OR.
