It is with great sorrow—and many loving memories—that we announce the passing of Dwight Remmich on May 3, 2025. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Dwight leaves behind laughter, wisdom, and an indelible legacy of commitment & caring.
Born on February 28, 1952, in Jamestown, North Dakota, Dwight was the only child of Arthur and Stella Remmich. He attended Jamestown College and the University of Illinois before dedicating the next 45 years of his life to the North Dakota Department of Corrections in Bismarck. Known for his unwavering work ethic, Dwight walked through blizzards on foot to report to the Youth Correctional Center when emergency vehicles were unavailable. He set records not only for working overtime but also for accumulating the most unused sick leave of any state employee—a testament to both his dedication and resilience.
On July 10, 1984, Dwight married Renee Olson, in Bismarck. Together, they reared three children and built a home filled with curiosity and adventure. A lifelong advocate for health and wellness, Dwight ran marathons, climbed mountains, and inspired his family to explore the beauty of the outdoors. Whether hiking through national parks or lending his sharp humor and helpful spirit to Renee’s business, Dwight was always at the heart of the family—cracking jokes, offering insight, and making memories.
Dwight had an extraordinary mind and a deep passion for biblical studies, world history, and politics. He delighted in photography, wiener dogs, gardening, collecting rocks, and savoring strong coffee. A loyal New York Yankees and Green Bay Packers fan, he also found great joy in later years of photographing the landscapes, wildflowers, and wildlife of the North Shore. Though a private and introspective soul, Dwight held profound knowledge of classical music, art, and scripture, which he shared in thoughtful and often humorous ways. His creativity, intellect, and offbeat wit could brighten even the darkest of situations.
Dwight's spirit & memory are embraced by his wife, Renee; his children, Nathaniel Remmich (Kaarin) and Andréa Johnson (Aaron); and his grandchildren, Lucas and Layla. He was preceded in death by his parents and several in-laws.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 20 at Bismarck Funeral Home, Bismarck, ND.
We miss him profoundly and were not prepared to say goodbye, yet his courage, love, and the strength embodied in his “hard-fought hallelujah” will forever inspire us. We find comfort in knowing he is now free and at eternal peace with our Heavenly Father.
