Born on October 10, 1925, on a farm near Long Lake, SD, to Fred and Eva (Lammle) Burrer, Esther was one of eight children. She attended teachers’ school in Aberdeen, SD, and while teaching at a country school, she met Alvin Herman, who would become the love of her life. They married on June 1, 1947, and shared 77 years of true love.
Esther and Alvin were blessed with two sons, Steven and Bruce. Esther worked for many years at A.W. Lucas Company and later at the Bank of Burleigh County. In the early 1960s, the couple bought a lot at Lake Isabel and built a cabin. Esther cherished the lake life, often pulling weeds from the beach, doing touch-up painting, or cleaning—tasks she considered a labor of love. She enjoyed evening boat rides with Alvin.
The couple also purchased several campers and embraced the camping lifestyle as members of the Good Sam Club. In retirement, they traveled to Arizona as snowbirds for nearly 31 years and spent their summers camping with the Good Sam Club or at their lake cabin.
She is survived by her sons Steven (Marcia) and Bruce (Lucilda) Herman, grandchildren, Chad (Pamela), Jeremy, Scott (Kimberly), Micheal and Tyler (Karissa) Herman, greatgrandchildren, Cameron, Colton, Grace, Liam, Blaire, Kaylin and Kya Herman.
She was preceded in death by her husband Al, her parents, brothers, Edmund, Edwin, Alfred and sisters, Hazel Merkel, Gladys Kiemelie, Frieda Herman, Irene Burkhardt and grand daughter-in-law, Dana.
Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Sanford Health and Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center for their wonderful care.
