Gary Lee Sickler, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and man of faith, passed away peacefully at home on June 16, 2025, at the age of 80 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on September 6, 1944, in Orange, California, where his father was stationed during World War II, Gary was primarily raised on a farm in Dunn County, North Dakota. Those early years instilled in him a deep sense of resilience, humility, and purpose that carried through every chapter of his life.
After graduating from Dickinson State University in 1967, Gary began his professional journey as a teacher before starting a long career with Montana-Dakota Utilities (MDU). In retirement, he found fulfillment working part-time with the non-profit Pride Inc. as a handyman, where he enjoyed fixing and improving the places where people lived.
Gary shared 51 years of marriage with his dear wife, Ardyce Sickler (Koeser). Together, they built a life of love, generosity, and faith. He was a dedicated father to three children - stepson Brad Nelsen, son Matthew Sickler (wife Cary Anne Trainor), and daughter Brittany Sickler. He took great pride in his role as “Grandpa” to Ethan (7), Claire (6) and Noah Sickler (4), sharing stories about growing up, teaching them how to draw an authentic red barn, and patiently including them in all sorts of projects.
He found joy in many hobbies: tending to his garden, canoeing, hunting, exploring health topics, and diving into curious questions about everything from history to woodworking. Gary both loved learning and sharing what he discovered - always with a story, a smile, or a suggestion that made you feel seen and cared for.
A longtime member of Cornerstone Community Church, Gary lived out his faith through steady service, meaningful relationships, and an unwavering belief in doing right by others. He is survived by his wife Ardyce; his children and grandchildren; and his five remaining siblings, whose bond was a source of lifelong support and joy. He is preceded in death by his parents, Math and Betty Sickler, and his brother Howard Sickler.
Visitation will be held at Bismarck Funeral Home on Sunday, June 22, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The funeral service will take place on Monday, June 23, at 10:30 a.m. at Cornerstone Community Church, with a luncheon to follow at the Bismarck Eagles. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heavens Helpers Soup Cafe with a note in memory of Gary Sickler.
