Harold H. Neumiller, 89, Bismarck, died March 4, 2023, at St. Gabriels Bendictine Living Community. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 27, at Bismarck Funeral Home. Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Harold was born June 27, 1933, at rural Mercer, to Christ and Katherine (Klein) Neumiller. He was the youngest of nine children.  He grew up on the family farm and later lived in Bismarck where he graduated from Bismarck High. He entered the U.S. Army on April 28, 1953 and served two years, but while waiting to be deployed to Korea, the war ended. He was honorably discharged on April 27, 1955 and returned to Bismarck where he married Marlys L. Lobach on January 28, 1956. They made their home in Bismarck where they raised 4 children.  He worked as a route salesman for Central Bottling and later Old Dutch. He was employed there for many years before retiring in 1995. Marlys and Harold celebrated 52 years of marriage before her death in 2008.

Harold enjoyed fishing, camping, and hunting with his family, fishing the Missouri River frequently with his son, Scott.  He loved camping at Lake New Johns or Lake Sakakawea with the whole Neumiller clan. Everyone in the family looked forward to his fish fries.  He also enjoyed many crisp mornings goose hunting with family and friends and numerous Canadian geese were cooked on the rotisserie. Deer hunting was another favorite time of year and many pounds of venison country style and summer sausage were made each year.

When he wasn’t enjoying the great outdoors, he could be found playing pinochle at the VFW.

The grandkids have fond memories of going to Grandma and Grandpa’s house in the summer, where Grandpa always made them chocolate chip or banana chocolate chip pancakes each morning.

The family would like to thank his other “daughter” and neighbor, DeeDee Handtmann, for always helping and watching over Harold.  When DeeDee moved further away, Tanya Heinen took over.  They both added many smiles and laughter to Harold’s last years.  Their help, along with many other neighbors and grandson Colton’s assistance, enabled him to stay in his own home as long as possible.  We would also like to thank St. Gabriel’s Benedictine Living Community.  The staff loved Harold and helped keep that smile on his face, even though he missed his own home and his health was failing.

He is survived by his daughter, Jeri (Scott) Borchert, Menoken; son, Scott (Donna), New Salem; his son-in-law, Michael Giertych, Salem, OR; his grandchildren, Krystal (Ryan) Burgard, Tower City, Cody Neumiller, Williston, and Colton Neumiller, Bismarck, Travis (Tiffany) Giertych and Tyler (Courtney) Giertych, both of Salem, OR, Sherri Borchert, Alaska, Max Borchert, West Fargo, and Randy Borchert, Stanton; four great-grandchildren and 7 step great-grandchldren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marlys (2008), daughter Janelle Giertych (1998), son Mark (2014) and all eight of his brothers and sisters, and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
