Harold Lloyd Ziegler, 90, of Bismarck, North Dakota, passed away from natural causes on September 29, 2026, in Bismarck.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Bismarck Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
Harold was born on December 10, 1935, in Kief, North Dakota, to Fred and Lydia Ziegler. He grew up on the family farm near Mercer, North Dakota, with his 13 siblings. Although his formal education ended after the eighth grade, he gained a lifetime of knowledge through hard work and practical experience.
On November 27, 1960, Harold married Darla Jeannette Lauer in McClusky, North Dakota. Together, they made their home in Bismarck, where they raised their family.
Harold served in the United States Army from November 1957 through August 1959, attaining the rank of private first class. One of his best memories during his service was his time stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Harold devoted his working life to construction and spent many years self-employed, building homes for families. He especially valued his early years working alongside his nephews, Dale and Dawayne, and the many years he worked with Ron Helm. Building was more than his livelihood; it was his passion. He often encouraged his children to continue working for as long as they were able, and he would gladly have remained in his trade throughout his life had his health allowed.
He was a private man with a strong Christian faith which became stronger in his later years. His favorite bible verse was John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
And whenever possible, Harold found great joy in fishing and continued to go out on his own well into his 80s. He also enjoyed cooking and baking, with brownies and German chocolate cake his favorites. Among his favorite everyday treats were Mountain Dew, Little Debbie snacks, and Bearscat Donuts.
Harold is survived by his children, Scott (Lisa) and Lee (Deborah); his step-grandchildren, Ben (Jenny) Hilsen, McKenzie Hilsen, and Brandon(Laura) Beaudoin; several great-grandchildren; his siblings, Arnold, Betty Waller, Janet Wagner, and Roger; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Darla, who passed away on October 26, 2013; his parents, Fred and Lydia; and his siblings, Alice, Walter, Irvin, Herbert, Bill, Frieda, Martha, Esther Wall, and Norma.
Harold will be remembered for his dedication to family, his strong work ethic, his craftsmanship, and the simple pleasures he enjoyed throughout a life well lived.
