Helen Mae Ronning was born Oct. 6, 1932, at Red Elm, SD, the daughter of Sigurd and Gurina (Graslie) Ronning. She was six years old when the family moved to a farm near Forbes, ND; and later to a farm near Barnard, SD. She graduated from Barnard High School in 1950, where she was the captain of the basketball team and the Homecoming Queen. She then graduated from Aberdeen School of Commerce in 1951. She worked at Socony Mobile Oil Company in Aberdeen, SD. In 1953 she married Glen Binegar of Ipswich, SD and they lived there until 1961, when they moved to Aberdeen, SD. They then moved to Devils Lake (1962), Napoleon (1963) and Dickinson ND (1965), before being transferred to Bismarck in 1968. Helen worked at the Bismarck Hospital (now Sanford) as the switchboard operator and the Bismarck Anesthesia Association as the office manager before retiring in 1989. She was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Women of the ELCA (WELCA), the Bismarck Study Club, and the Sons of Norway—at times serving as the chapter president.

Helen embraced her Norwegian roots and embodied the Midwest ethic of “work-hard, play hard.” She was dedicated to her family and was proud of “my boys” and their families. She made sure every family gathering, especially the holidays, was joyful and fun. She prepared wonderful meals as well as a seemingly endless supply of lefse and cookies. As her husband Glen said, she was the glue that kept the family together.

Helen was a talented artist and enjoyed experimenting with oils, pastels, and charcoal. Her sense of esthetics carried over to how she decorated her home and to her person. She was a classy lady in how she dressed and in how she comported herself. She will be missed beyond measure.

Helen and Glen had a loving marriage. They worked very well together and did a remarkable job raising their children. In Helen’s final years, she spoke often about looking forward to joining Glen in heaven one day.

She is survived by six sons and five daughters-in-law: Jim and Cindi, Aurora CO.; Brad and Cindy, Bismarck, ND; Bill and Wendy, Boise ID; Randy and Pam, Bismarck, ND; Eric, Buckeye AZ; and Joe and Mary, Onalaska WI. Fifteen grandchildren: Doug, Shelby, Nikki, Matthew, Dakota, Meagan, Scout, Jackson, Erica, Nash, Dakota, Kennedy, Brooke, Jeb and Cokie; and one brother Ardel, Billings MT. Preceding her in death are her parents, two brothers Martin (Patty) and Gilman; three sisters Sylvia (Irvin), Millie (Andy), and Gladys (Maurice and Merlyn).

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Home on the Range, Sentinel Butte, ND.
