Janie Fiala-Kress

Janie Margaret Fiala-Kress, 75, passed away May 17, 2025. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 28 at 10:30 AM at the Bismarck Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Janie was born on June 25, 1950, to Albert and Shirley (McClelland) Fiala. She was raised and educated in Bellevue, WA where she graduated high school. She graduated with honors from the University of Washington in Food Service and Nutrition.

On February 14, 1994 she married Donnie Kress. She worked as an airline stewardess for TWA Airlines for 25 years, and then in the hotel industry until she retired in 2002.

In retirement, she was involved in Soroptimist, the Red Hat Society, and Oro Bay Yacht Club. She lived a very active life in Washington. Janie loved fishing and fly fishing, she made her own flies. She enjoyed boating, gardening, golfing, and riding horse. She had a knack for decorating and loved fashion, and later in life became an avid thrift shopper.

Janie had a sunny personality and always found something to enjoy in life. Towards the end of her life, she especially enjoyed caring for her dog Riley and spoiling her great-nieces and great-nephews.

She and Donnie lived on Anderson Island outside of Seattle for five years until 2011 when they moved to Arizona. In 2021, they moved to Coeur d'Alene, ID due to poor health. Her health continued to decline which prompted their move to Bismarck, ND in 2024 to be closer to family. Janie spent the last few months of her life at Edgewood Memory Care in Bismarck.

Janie is survived by her husband of 31 years Donnie; sisters, Patty (Paul) Carlson and Mary (Greg) Frazier; brother, Michael Fiala; brothers-in-law, Rodney Kress and Jerry (Marla) Kress; sister-in-law, Cyndi (Mike) McIntee; and several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Janie was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; Uncle Doc and Aunt Norma McClelland; nephew, Shane McIntee and niece, Kaitlyn Bacon.
