Johanna (Joan) Schwahn

Johanna (Joan) Schwahn, 87, passed away on Monday, May 19, 2025, from Alzheimer’s Dementia, under the care of Sanford Hospice at St. Vincent’s Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at St. Anne Catholic Church in Bismarck. Burial will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bismarck on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Visitation will be held at Bismarck Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, May 23, 2025 with a Rosary at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Johanna was born on May 9, 1938 in Linton, ND to Stephen and Barbara (Bichler) Bosch. She attended rural school in Emmons County, ND and high school in Strasburg, ND. Johanna graduated in 1957.

After graduation, Johanna moved to Bismarck and started a job at Peavey Seed Company.

On June 16, 1958, Johanna married Victor Schwahn in Strasburg, ND. Together, they settled in Bismarck and Johanna continued to work at Peavey Seed Company until the birth of their first child in September of 1959. Johanna returned to work in 1975 at Northwestern Bell Telephone (US West) and retired in 1996.

After retirement, Victor and Johanna, stayed busy with many activities and traveled the first 3 months of the past 27 years in their motor home to Mesa, Arizona.

Victor and Johanna started Square and Round dancing in 1973. They danced until a few years ago and went to many State and International Square and Round Dance conventions.

Johanna was a woman of many talents. She was an excellent seamstress. She sewed many of her square dance dresses along with matching shirts for Victor. She could knit and crochet and made many blankets and other items with her talent. She was an excellent cook and her kids and grandkids loved her chicken knoephla soup. She also was an excellent baker and cake decorator. She made thousands of kuchen and baked and decorated hundreds of cakes including wedding cakes. Her children and friends also loved her homemade ice cream and chocolate topping.

She is survived by her husband of almost 67 years, Victor; her three children, Dan (Renae) Schwahn, Dave (Kathy) Schwahn and Diane (Tim) Jensen; her grandchildren, Tara (Nolan) Canright, Trenton (Tiffany) Schwahn and Taylor (Ben) Webb; her great-grandchildren, Nate Canright, Brooke Canright, Cade Canright, Jace Canright, Holden Schwahn, Cruz Schwahn and Knox Schwahn; step-grandchild, Jennifer (Charlie) Simpson; step-great-grandchildren, Cayden Simpson and Aaron Simpson; one sister, Marlene (Gene) Mastel, one brother Steve (Jill) Bosch, two sisters-in-law, Eilene Krumm and Kathy (Rod) Rising, one brother-in-law, Lew Brezden and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Benedict Bosch.
