Joyce Arlene Kroll Barkie passed away at her home on August 11, 2025, from natural causes. She was 79 years old.
Joyce was born on June 29, 1946, in Denison, Iowa, to Wilber and Ruby Kroll. She was raised in Nebraska and graduated from Northwest High School in Grand Island. At age 17, while working at a café in Concordia, Kansas, she met Roger Noftsker. Their connection was instant, and the two married in December 1963 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Joyce and Roger moved to Baker, Montana, and welcomed two sons: Darin in 1965 and Brian in 1966. Though their marriage ended in 1981, Joyce remained a devoted and loving mother.
In 1983, she moved to Williston, North Dakota, where she met Jerry Barkie. They were married on April 27, 1993, and made Williston their home for many years.
Joyce was a hardworking and dedicated professional. She spent many years at First National Bank and later worked for Williston Public Works before retiring early. After retirement, she moved to Bismarck, ND, where she made many new friends, joined a social club, and found joy in cooking for the residents in her building.
Joyce was known far and wide for her culinary talents. She loved cooking for others and
sharing her favorite recipes. She treasured her close friendships, particularly with Melissa, Ann B., and Delores. Her signature look featured cowboy boots and western attire, and she took great pride in decorating her home in that style. She was an active member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Pheasants Forever, and The Moose Lodge. She also loved the quiet moments—solving Sudoku puzzles, and doting on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Joyce is survived by her sons, Darin (Wanda) Noftsker of Gillette, WY, and Brian Noftsker of Circle, MT; stepdaughter Teresa Schroeder of Kenmare, ND. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Ralynn (Kyle) Rogge, Tara Noftsker, Andrea (James) Dyson, Erica (Jed) Jespersen, Samuel Noftsker, McKenzie Schroeder, and Paxton Schroeder; and ten great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilber and Ruby Kroll; her brother, Richard “Rick” Kroll; her former spouse, Roger Noftsker; her late husband, Jerry Barkie; her stepson Darren “Chewy” Barkie; and daughter-in-law Cheri Noftsker.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no formal funeral. Joyce chose to donate her body to the University of North Dakota School of Medicine to further scientific research. A memorial celebration of her life will be held later this fall in Williston, North Dakota.
Joyce's legacy is one of fierce love for her family and friends. She will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know her.
