Lydell Forthun

Lydell Forthun, 91, of Bismarck, ND, passed away peacefully May 8, 2026, at St. Benedictine Living Community in Bismarck.

Lydell Melvin Forthun was born July 3, 1934, to Melvin and Lisa Forthun in Columbus, ND. He enlisted in the Navy after graduating high school in Columbus. He was employed by the North Dakota Highway Department, Grand Forks Air Force Base and Coal Gasification Plant in Beulah.

Lydell is survived by his son, Greg; daughters, Del Rae (Greg) Freeman, Vickie (Jeff) Haas, and Myrna (Ben) Hiebert as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Luella; his son, Steve; his sisters, Helen Dewing, Lyla Rollofson and Elaine Benson; and brothers, Marlin and Vernell.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held Thursday, May 28 at 12:30 PM at the Bismarck Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.
