Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on April 19, 1942, Marv was the son of Marvin “Mike” and Elizabeth Borgelt. He pursued higher education with determination, earning his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota and later an MBA from the University of Maryland. After receiving his MBA, he went on to University of Pennsylvania to begin his PHD, but his education was interrupted by the Vietnam War. It was then Marv joined the U.S. Army and served with distinction as a Medical Supply Officer at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, Fort Carson, Colorado, and Seoul, Korea. He returned stateside as a captain, stationed in New York City, where he performed the solemn duty of death notification.
Following his military service, he was called back to Minneapolis to manage his father’s road construction business. It was there he met and married Ellen Strong, and together they had three children: Laura (Brendan), Kate (Bill), and Michael (Meagan).
A trip for a swim meet to Bismarck, North Dakota, with his daughter Laura led Marv to a new chapter in life. He applied for a teaching position at the University of Mary and was hired as a Business instructor - a role he embraced with passion and dedication. In 1983, Marv met his wife Joyce, and with their union, his family grew to include three more children: Chad, Kelly (Kerrie), and Kris (Rod).
Marv was a beloved educator, mentor, and advisor at the University of Mary. His students remembered him fondly, often stopping to greet him years after graduation. He had a deep love for travel, especially in the RV with Joyce, and cherished time spent at their cabin on Brush Lake, fishing, boating, and making memories with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife Joyce; his six children; 13 grandchildren; his sister Kay Amoth; and sister and brother-in-law Audrey and Delbert Bargmann. He was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law Erma and Ernie Beckman; sister and brother-in-law Corrine and Bill Brickman; brother-in-law Wayne Beckman; and nephew Charles Brickman.
Marv’s life was marked by service, love, and a commitment to education and family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
