Marvin D. Becher

d. October 23, 2023

Marvin D. Becher, 88, Almont, North Dakota, passed away on Monday, October 23, at his home after a three year battle with cancer.  A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bismarck Funeral Home.  Burial will be held at a later date.

Marvin was born on December 1, 1934, on the family farm near Blue Grass North Dakota, the son of Emil and Marie (Unruh) Becher.  He attended country school and worked on the family farm until joining the Army. After being discharged from the Army he returned home and continued to work on the farm in addition to working on the construction of the I94 between New Salem and Glen Ullin. In the fall of 1963, he attended Jacks Hair Stylist College and after completing his course he worked at the salon.

While working for Jack, Marvin met Doris Feland, another hairdresser, and they were married on September 4th, 1968. Together they opened Marv’s House of Beauty in Bismarck. It was hard work, but he enjoyed it!  After closing the beauty shop, Marvin worked for Andry Industry & Miesner Company installing pools and overhead garage doors. They welcomed two sons, Brendan and Russell, during this time and lived north of Bismarck on the Missouri River. In 1990 the family moved to the Mortenson Ranch on the Heart River Near Almont North Dakota.

He was fond of music and could usually be found with a guitar in his hands or the radio on. Marvin loved the outdoors and was always outside, especially in the summer. The hotter the better!  He enjoyed hunting and fishing and taught the boys all he knew. He loved to take them on the sand bars of the Missouri River, hunting on the farm, and Salmon fishing on Lake Sakakawea. He enjoyed working in the garden and couldn’t wait to get it started every spring. But his favorite pastime was auctions and going to rummage sales.

He was also a great inventor and loved to problem solve and fix things. There wasn’t much he couldn’t repair from machinery, welding and woodworking. He always had a project to work on.

He is survived by his loving wife Doris, 2 sons Russell and Brendan (Sara) and granddaughters, Sophie and Avery, all of Almont, 1 sister Elaine (Ken) Reich, Zap, North Dakota and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Marie, sisters, Betty Moos and Mardella Carter, brothers Gordon and Walter; nieces Wyonne and Annette: in-laws Trygve and Mabel Feland and the Mortenson Family.

The Family wishes to thank Hospice of the Red River Valley for the wonderful care he received.
