Marvin Allen Dachtler, 92, of Bismarck, North Dakota, passed away peacefully at home on October 17, 2025, surrounded by his family.
Marvin was born on May 5, 1933, in Grant County, North Dakota, to Oscar and Elizabeth (Kapsch) Dachtler. He was baptized on December 30, 1933.
On April 25, 1954, Marvin married Ione Klein, and together they shared 35 wonderful years of marriage and raised seven children before her passing on April 2, 1989.
Marvin spent his younger years working for the railroad, and lots of neighboring farmers. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, spending time stationed in Germany before receiving an honorable discharge. Following his service, he built a long career in trucking, driving his own truck for over 30 years until his retirement. His strong work ethic and dedication were matched only by his love for his family.
Over the years, Marvin called Elgin and Bismarck home. No matter where he lived, he made friends easily — he could talk to anyone and never met a stranger.
Marvin had a love for the simple joys in life. He enjoyed gardening, canning, and pickling, and was especially proud of his homemade treats. He liked to head to the Amvets, where he enjoyed some gaming, good food, and great company. He was known for his sweet tooth — especially Dorothy’s cookies and candy — and rarely turned down a good cup of coffee or a puff of pipe tobacco. He loved watching baseball, playing golf, and telling stories that could fill a room with laughter.
He was a proud member of the American Legion and the Lions Club and also served as a deputy with the Elgin Police Department. He spoke fluent German and carried forward the hardworking, family-centered values he grew up with.
Marvin is survived by his children Jeffrey (Terry) Dachtler of Arizona, Gregory (Roseanne) Dachtler of Bismarck, Valerie (Milt) Dahlsad of Minnesota, Wade Dachtler of Bismarck, Mitchel Dachtler of Bismarck, Corey Dachtler of Bismarck, Roxann (Robert) Michlitsch of Bismarck as well as Grandchildren Stacey (Jamie) Thompson, Rhiannon (Josh) Rosen, Michael Dachtler, Shawn Dachtler, Heather (Tom) McGannon, Stephanie (Chris) Webber, Gary Lee Hintz, John Ross Hintz, Liz (Daniel) Omang, Joey Dachtler, Preston Dachtler, Bo Dachtler, Cody (Miranda) Dachtler, Sarah (Chad) Timmer, Steven (Elizabeth) Michlitsch; as well as many great-grandchildren. Also survived by one sister-in-law, Mary Dachtler of Iowa and brother-in-law, Gene Klein.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Elizabeth Dachtler; his wife, Ione; brothers George, Gerhardt, and Johnny; and sister Dorothy Ennis.
A celebration of Marvin’s life will be held at Bismarck Funeral Home in Bismarck, ND on October 28th, 2025 with visitation beginning at 11:00am and services to follow. Burial will take place at the Veteran’s Cemetery at 1:00pm in Mandan, ND with military honors provided by the American Legion.
The family invites friends to join them for a reception following the service to share memories, laughter, and stories in honor of Marvin’s life at the Amvets in Bismarck, ND.
Those who knew him will remember his easy smile, his warm conversations, and his love for family. His legacy of kindness, humor, and hard work will live on in all who had the privilege of knowing him.
