Mavis Baranyk

July 10, 1934 — November 12, 2025

Mavis Baranyk, 91, of Bismarck passed away on November 12, 2025. She was born on July 10, 1934, to William and Gertrude (Sundstrom) Allen at the family farm near Washburn, ND.

Mavis married DuWayne Baranyk on October 13, 1956. They settled in Bismarck, where they raised their three children and lived together happily for almost 60 years.

Mavis loved deeply, laughed often, and expressed her creativity freely. She cherished every moment spent traveling with her family, making treasured memories exploring California, New York, Missouri, and more. At home, Mavis expressed her love through her sewing, baking, and cooking talents. Her delicious apple pie, crinkle cookies, scotcheroos, and potato salad were among her family's favorites. Mavis never met an animal she did not love, spoiling all her pets and giving generously to animals in need. From childhood, she maintained lifelong friendships, conversing frequently with Ione and meeting biweekly for soda dates at Rock'n 50's Cafe with Cleo.

For her 90th birthday, family and friends from all over the country gathered to celebrate her life and try to return to her a fraction of the love she gave throughout her life.

Mavis is survived by her children Greg (Rose) Baranyk, Terry (Jeff) Dick, and Pam Sprynczynatyk; grandchildren Amanda Baranyk, Ashley (Eric Sainio) Baranyk, Matthew (Giza) Baranyk, Marlowe (Christy) McDowell, Randall McDowell, Emily Dick, Annitsa Sprynczynatyk, Samuel (Medora) Sprynczynatyk, and Edison Sprynczynatyk; great-grandchildren Taylor McDowell, Tarryn McDowell, Maximus McDowell, and Carson McDowell; and her beloved cat Joey.

She is preceded in death by her husband DuWayne, sisters Iohla Arner and Elayne Fahlgren, and several brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, November 19 at 10:30am at Bismarck Funeral Home. Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the animal shelter of your choice in Mavis's memory.
