Rochus "Roy" Nagel

Rochus M. “Roy” Nagel, age 96, passed away on May 28, 2026.

Mass of Christian Burial will be June 4 at 10:00 AM at Church of St. Anne. Visitation will be held June 3 from 5-7PM at Bismarck Funeral Home with a rosary at 7:00 PM. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Roy, born on January 7, 1930, to Max and Mary (Masset) Nagel.

On November 6, 1958, Roy married Ann Marie Scherr, and together they welcomed seven children: Louise, Dorinda, Galen, Lawrence, Thomas, Daniel, and Donavan. The couple farmed in the Strasburg, ND area, before they moved to Linton, ND where Roy served the community as a police officer. Later, the family moved to Bismarck ND, where Roy worked as a correctional officer at the North Dakota State Penitentiary, retiring after 30 dedicated years of service.

After Ann's passing in 1971, Roy raised six children as a single parent, providing them with unwavering support and strength.

On February 16, 1980 he married Adeline Wickenheiser. Their life was grounded in faith, family and service.

Roy was exceptionally creative and enjoyed working with his hands. He was a skilled brick and stone mason. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, gardening, camping and playing cards. He treasured time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren which were filled with stories, laughter and faith.

As a devoted Roman Catholic, Roy lived his faith through community action. He volunteered countless hours at church functions including the Knights of Columbus and lovingly handcrafted thousands of rosaries and donated them to parishes and global missions.

Roy is survived by his wife, Adeline Nagel; children, Dorinda Sigala, Galen Nagel, Lawrence Nagel, Thomas (Kelly) Nagel and Donavan (Sarah) Nagel; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. He also leaves behind his brother, Johnny (Luella) Nagel and brother-in-law, Thomas White.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Mary Nagel; his first wife, Ann; two children, Louise Nagel and Daniel Nagel; brothers, Pius (Bernie) Nagel, Edwin (Delores) Nagel and Herman (Joy) Nagel; sisters, Cecelia (Aloysius) Deis, Johanna (Alvin) Horner and Floradina White.

Roy will be remembered for his steadfast faith, his deep love of family, his quiet strength and the lasting legacy of kindness he leaves behind.
