Roman Fettig

Roman N. Fettig, 82, of Crosby, ND, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on May 7, 2026.

Born on October 5, 1943, Roman dedicated his life to education, community service, and his country. He was a very loving and supportive husband, father, and grandfather. He loved to brag about his children and grandchildren to anyone that would listen. He was proud to be a true North Dakotan and all that it entails.

Roman's career was marked by his dedication to teaching science. He was known for his classroom pets like the rabbits that followed him down the hallway and his laboratory approach to teaching. He not only taught but also coached various sports teams which included being the first ever girls’ basketball coach at DCHS, enriching many young lives.

He also served the Crosby community as a businessman while dedicating over four decades to assisting fellow veterans as a Veteran's Service Officer. His unwavering commitment was a testament to his love for America and his community. A proud veteran, Roman served in the Army, where he brought the same passion and dedication that characterized his civilian life. His military service was an integral part of who he was and resonated through his continued support for veteran affairs.

Roman was a devout member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where he participated in numerous church activities, helped train altar servers and formed lasting relationships within his spiritual community.

His hobbies included golfing, hunting, fishing, playing pinochle and attending local sporting events. Roman was often seen at Divide County High School games, cheering and supporting with genuine enthusiasm. An expert leather and shoe repairman, he also enjoyed reupholstering vehicles and furniture, showcasing his meticulous and skilled craftsmanship. His love for the outdoors was complemented by bird watching and following the sun in his swing.

He is survived by his loving wife, Donna (Hooge); his children; Jackie Lee (Eric) and their children Abigail, Ashton & Ryker; Jennifer VanOekel (Matt), and their children Jaxon & Alice Margaret; James Fettig (Lindsey) and their children Hunter, Kade, Kellen, & Evan; Elizabeth Bays (John) and their children Chaos & Isabella. He also leaves behind his brothers Alfred, Richard, and Duane, and sisters Loretta Mashak and Carla Fettig.

Roman was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Margaret Fettig; brother, Thomas Fettig and sister, LaVon (Fettig) Muzzy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 30th at 11:00 Am at St. Patrick's Church in Crosby, ND; welcoming all who knew and loved him. A burial with military honors will be conducted at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan on Thursday, June 18th at 2:00 PM, honoring his service and commitment to the nation.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Legion Post #75, supporting veterans and their families in honor of Roman's lifelong dedication to service.
