Tracy S. Smith

September 14, 1956 — December 18, 2025

Tracy Smith, 69, a long-time resident of Bismarck, ND, passed away unexpectedly on December 18, 2025. Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Tracy was born on September 14, 1956, in Biloxi, MS. He was the last child born to a military family of six children. In his youth, Tracy lived in Mississippi, Tampa, FL, Puerto Rico; and Atlanta, Georgia. He completed high school at Briarcliff High School in Atlanta.

Tracy never married and had no children, yet he often spoke highly of his “Bismarck family” who celebrated with him on holidays and other events in his life. He developed lasting friendships during his time in Bismarck and earned a reputation as someone trustworthy with deep Christian beliefs. He organized and led Bible studies for his circle of friends. Known for his impressive mechanical skills, Tracy was able to fix nearly any powered tool or electronic device—one friend remarked that he repaired everything in his home. Whenever his friends needed assistance, Tracy was always there to lend a helping hand.

Tracy served in the Air Force between 1974 to 1981. In fact, it was the Air Force that first brought him to North Dakota and ultimately, he remained there following his honorable discharge.

He loved the cold weather and wide-open countryside around Bismarck. Tracy had many hours of varied military training with one of the most significant being “Automatic Tracking Radar Repairman”. While serving his country, Tracy earned Good Conduct Medals; Longevity Service Award Ribbons; and Outstanding Unit Award Ribbons.

After the Air Force, Tracy had a variety of jobs, oftentimes related to computers and fixing things. The last position he held for approximately 10 years was with Acme Tools in Bismarck.

Tracy is survived by his four siblings, Mary (Glenn) Sweeney; Sheila (Roger) Bilow; Greg (Cathy) Smith; and Helen King. Tracy was preceded in death by his parents, William E. Smith and Martina B. Smith and his sister, Doris Goldstein.
